The current cost of a theory test is £30 for car and motorcycle.
The theory test and hazard perception test for LGV and PCV are two separate tests. The fee for the LGV / PCV multiple choice test is £35 and the fee for the LGV / PCV hazard perception test is £15.

Before you can take your theory test you will need to make sure you have a valid provisional driving licence. You can apply for a provisional driving licence from DVA Licensing. The application form (form DL1) can be obtained from your local Post Office.

Once you have a valid provisional driving licence you can book your theory test.

To book a theory test online you will need:
- a valid UK driving licence
- a valid debit or credit card for payment (Visa, Mastercard, Delta, Visa Electron, Switch/Maestro and Solo cards are accepted)

Payments
To book a test online, in addition to your Northern Ireland or GB Driving Licence number you need a valid credit or debit card. We use the same level of security as banks and other financial institutions to protect your personal details during and after the transaction.
To use a credit or debit card to make a payment, you need to be the actual card holder.
All payments on this site are in pounds sterling.

Security
We are fully committed to keeping your personal details safe and we are using secure server software to encrypt (put into code) your personal information. The level of encryption used is in line with security requirements and industry standards.
To access secure (https) pages on this site, you will need a 40-bit SSL enabled browser. The secure transaction pages for our online services need 128-bit encryption provided as standard in browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, Netscape 4.7 or later, etc.
Service Availability
You can normally book, cancel or change a theory test online 24 hours a day, every day. However during period of system maintenance the service may be unavailable for short periods of time.
During these short periods of unavailability you may also make a booking by downloading a postal application form (in pdf format) to fill in.

To book a theory test with an operator over the phone you will need:
- a valid UK driving licence

When you book your test you will be given a reference number and sent an appointment letter that you should expect to receive within four working days of your call. If you do not receive your appointment letter within this time then contact the booking office.

To book a theory test by post you will need an application form. Application forms are available online, from theory and practical test centres and if applicable from your driving instructor. Payment can be made by cheque or postal order, but cash payments are not accepted. Postal orders and cheques must be made payable to Driver & Vehicle Agency. Please write your Driving Licence number on the back of your cheque or postal order.
Take note of the date you posted your application and if, after 10 days, you have not received an appointment confirmation letter, please contact us immediately on
0845 600 6700.
DVA can not take responsibility for postal delays. If you miss your theory test appointment you will lose your fee.

You can reschedule or cancel a test over the phone via the booking line or you can do it online. You must give at least 3 full working days notice, or you will forfeit your theory test fee. For example if you want to cancel your test and it is on a Tuesday, you will need to ring the booking office by the previous wednesday afternoon at the latest.
